LED lighting is fast becoming the green choice to replace both incandescent and florescent lighting. The advantages of LED lighting include efficiency, variety and durability. LED lights are very, very efficient using a fraction of the energy required by other lights for the same brightness (lumen). The variety available is astounding with new LED product introduced almost daily and design options for DIY are limitless. LED bulbs last virtually forever with usage ratings of over 100,000 hours (thats over 20 years of typical use) compared to 1000 to 2000 hours of the typical incandescent. Off the shelf LED pot lights are very expensive ($100+) and for applications that require flood lighting LEDs just do not perform as well as incandescent.

While off the shelf products are expensive, individual components are relatively cheap.
